Frequently Asked Questions
01How does this word counter count words?
A word is any group of letters or numbers. Words joined by a hyphen or apostrophe, like “well-known” or “don’t”, count as one word. Spaces, line breaks and punctuation separate words, and symbols on their own are not counted.
02Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted inside your browser, and your text is never sent to our server. If autosave is on, your text is kept only in this browser so it is still there when you come back. Turn autosave off or press Clear to remove it.
03How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is based on an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations and speeches, and handwriting time uses 13 words per minute.
04What is keyword density?
Keyword density is how often a word or phrase appears compared with the total number of words, shown as a percentage. It helps you spot overused words and check that your main topic is clear without stuffing keywords.
05What does the readability score mean?
The readability score uses the Flesch Reading Ease formula, from 0 to 100. Higher scores are easier to read. Most web content should aim for 60 or higher, which most adults read comfortably. The grade level shows the US school grade needed to understand the text.
06How many words is a page?
About 500 words fill one single-spaced page and about 250 words fill one double-spaced page, using a 12-point font with standard margins. The counter shows both estimates.
