Frequently Asked Questions
01What is an XML sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a file that lists the pages on your website you want search engines to find. It helps Google and Bing discover new and updated pages faster, especially on larger sites or pages with few internal links.
02What is the difference between XML, image and HTML sitemaps?
The XML sitemap lists your pages for search engines. The image sitemap lists the images on each page so they can appear in Google Images. The HTML sitemap is a normal web page with links to all your pages, useful for visitors. The URL list (urllist.txt) is a plain list of addresses that some tools and older search engines accept.
03How do I add the sitemap to my website?
Upload sitemap.xml (and sitemap-images.xml if you use it) to your website’s root folder, so it opens at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Then add a “Sitemap:” line to your robots.txt and submit the sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
04Which pages are left out of the sitemap?
Pages that are blocked by robots.txt, marked noindex, point to a different canonical page, redirect, or return an error are left out, because search engines should not index them. You can see each one in the crawl report.
05How many pages can this tool crawl?
Up to 500 pages per crawl. For bigger websites, our team can set up an automatic sitemap that updates itself whenever you add pages.
06How often should I update my sitemap?
Update it whenever you add, remove or change important pages. Many content management systems, such as WordPress with an SEO plugin, can update the sitemap automatically.
